A little about me and this site
Hi, my name is Simon, I'm in my mid thirties and I live and cycle in Bangkok. One of my primary reasons for living in Bangkok is the freedom to travel around Southeast Asia (SEA).
I have been traveling SEA for over 15 years and cycling for about 10 of those years. The reasons for starting cycling are lost in beer and time, I remember being in a pub in London with my friend Fiona and Lee, but I do not remember exactly how we broached the subject of cycling in SEA (Cambodia was the first country mentioned) or how the decision was made. I do know that that night I walked out of the pub with the decision in my head which would change my life.
I have since cycled about 50,000Km in SEA and my rides have taken me through most countries in the region; Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore. I am yet to visit a few places like Indonesia and Timor and I flatly refuse to visit Myanmar (Burma) until democracy is installed.
I have always had a fascination with SEA culture and history. Cycle touring seemed to be a natural progression from the backpacking I was doing previously. Cyclists do tend to see another side of the countries they travel because they are moving at a different pace, this is more fun and more rewarding than the traditional backpacking.
I have started this site to give information to other cyclists and to act as a resource for information about routes, accommodation, things to see and other aspects of cycling in Southast Asia. I started this site as a labour of love, it is free to use and I am always grateful for any advice, help and comments. I don't know what future direction this site will take, but I hope it will be helpful to anyone wanting to ride their bicycle in Southeast Asia.
I will be adding more rides in the near future and I will be adding more rides as I complete them. My only problem with this is time. It does take me a while to get this information up on the site. If something is missing, please contact me and I will update it as soon as possible. To finish, Matt deserves a big mention for doing all the development. He has worked hard to produce what you see today. Thank you.
