BKK governor gets on his bike to lead energy saving campaign

BANGKOK, June 18 (TNA) - Bangkok governor took to the bike saddle on Wednesday to promote a new energy saving campaign, hoping to set an example of travelling green and cheap in the capital’s business areas.

Apirak Kosayodhin travelled a 1.5-kilometre distance by bicycle from Suan Lum Night Bazaar to Bangkok City Building on Sathorn Road, promoting a Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) campaign seeking to encourage Bangkokians to use bikes instead of cars, therefore saving energy and reducing their sky-rocketing gas bills.

The energy-saving campaign runs in line with the BMA’s recent establishment of dedicated bicycle lanes in congested business areas in Bangkok such as Sathorn, Silom and Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Road.

The idea is to encourage office staff as well as business executives working in the areas to turn to bicycles instead of cars, in connection with public transport.

The 1.2-metre wide bicycle lanes are safe to ride on with municipal officials present to monitor safety and provide assistance. Bicycle parking areas provided by the BMA are lit brightly and provide safety measures against theft. (TNA)
