Hey all,
My girlfriend and I plan on spending roughly 3 weeks (give or take a few days) romping through SEA once we finish our teaching contracts in Korea. We'll be flying into BKK and would like to see bits of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
Unfortunately, time certainly won't allow for a thorough exploration of the area, so maybe we'd be wise to cut out some of the itinerary and budget more time for the others.
If you had to choose to skip one of the four, which would it be? It's pulling teeth and splitting hairs, but I'm interested to hear what you all think. Vietnam might be on the chopping block simply due to its visa situation.
Cheers
Jake

My 2 cents worth, I would miss Vietnam, bad people, some nice places to see, but overall not as good value as Laos/Cambodia. You obviously have to go to Thailand.

I would dissagree with you there Leddy - Vietnam with a population of about 85 million folk is bound to have a few bad apples, but there is plenty of good honest people about as well. Vietnam has an interesting terrain with an excellent coastline and the towns are conveniently spaced with plenty of reasonable inexpensive accom. Local food is good and very affordable. Jake - I wouldn't let the price of a visa stop from me visiting a very interesting country.

I kinda agree with fietsman. Vietnam has such beautiful terrain that it would be a shame to miss it. There is such diversity in Vietnam, so much to see and do. If you are gonna miss one, then I vote Laos. Great people and things to see but the other countries have more to offer. I did like the Plain of Jars and Luang Prabang, but I had a better time in Cambodia and Vietnam. Laos has stuff to see but maybe a bit less 'attractive' than the other countries.

Just sharing my opinion. I m a malaysian, and have done thailand quite a lot, always on my motorcycles. What I found is that, what you really see thailand today is no longer a true picture. Somewhow it has lost its charm, the old culture has gone, though the people are still friendly. You see 7-eleven on every block now. It has become too commercial. Early this month I went on my motorycle tour again to south thailand and met a dutch couple staying next room to mine at Ao Nang Krabi. He told me the same the same thing, what we see is no longer thailand.
At present, the best place to go now are Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. Its at least 15 years behind thailand in many aspects.
