To top off a SEA tour this summer, I plan on having an extended stay in southern Thailand. I'm a beach bum, what can I say.

I've heard of the immaculate beaches of Ko Phi Phi, the touristy and thumping Phuket, and a few others I've come across via the Lonely Planet and the like.

Any personal suggestions?

Here's some criteria: I like mellow areas, but I do require a few beach bars/pubs to share some drinks and music with people. I also like to dive. Budget lodging is preferred, but I'm guessing accomidations won't be a problem during rainy season anyway.

For mellow times I reckon you cant beat Ton Sai near Krabi/Ao Nang. I loved the cool vibe and laid back beach life. Check it out, its cool.

Thanks

Koh Pan Ngan is always a safe bet. There are some cool resorts, bungalows and generally laid back vibe to the place. I would advise to stay away from Had Rin Beach near full moon party time, or any of the other party nights.

The other island you might try is Koh Lanta. It is less developed than Phi Phi. There is the whole beach bum thing going on. But it doesnt have the beauty of the more popular Phi Phi.

the island Koh Lanta is certainly worth going. I ve been there 3 times. There are many guests houses and the bungalows (just few yards fr the beach) is cheap. The toilets are clean too.

If you coming this summer, its low season now and the price for staying is even cheaper. I am taking my motorcyle from Malaysia to Lanta , Krabi and Hat Khao Lak this coming july (5-11 july). I wont be visiting Phuket, as it too commercialised nowadays.
