I plan on renting a bike (motor or pedal, depending on availability/laziness) to tour around some of the smaller areas, like Siem Reap, Chang Mai, etc..

I hear a lot of these places ask for passports as collatoral when you rent, and I'm not very keen on leaving that behind, or my credit card for that matter. How do people get around this?

...maybe I need to make a 'disposable' ID card on Khoa San.

Never, never, never EVER leave your passport with anyone. Not for bike rent, not for hotels, not for anyone or anything.

KSR copies are ok u can just leave a drivers license or you should leave a copy of your passport

NEVER LEAVE YOUR PASSPORT FOR ANY REASON

Don't do it. The owners will hold your passport to ransom whilst trying to gouge money from you for every little scratch on the machine (which was there before you rented it).
