This is a good idea Simon - here's my two bobs worth ...
In Phuket on the main road behind Kata (not the beach rd) there is a relatively good bicycle shop that deals in Merida Mtn bikes - not too far furher north on the same road there is a road bike specialist.
In the Krabi area at Ao Nang there is a very good bike shop called "Ao Nang Championship Bicycles". They are on the main road that heads inland from the beach at about 1.5 km distance. Very friendly English speaking owner and he deals in Trek and Gary Fisher also does reasonable price Trek mtn bike rentals.

fietsman, do you know the price of rentals? I guess we should try and gather that info as well as there seems plenty of folk interested in renting short/long term bikes when they come here.
How is the riding down there in Phuket? I have never riden to Phuket, but visited in my backpacking days. I know there is some kind of cycling scene as I think the Tour de Siam finishes there. Is it worth me planning a tour down there?

I'm sorry, I do not know of the price of rentals in Ao Nang ... as I happened to be riding my own bicycle. But judging by the amount of look-alike Trek mtn bikes about, it must have been quite inexpensive. There is also a Thai cyclist there who runs guided mtn bike tours in the local area as well as small local group of keen cyclists who plan rides a couple of times a week.
I think the Krabi area is more suitable for cycling than Phuket - which I believe isn't really all that good ... very steep mountainous headlands between many major beaches and rather busy roads with many crazy farangs on motor bikes. I guess it's ok to cruise around the beaches & such. If you keep your eyes open you will see a regular bunch of local mtn bikers doing loops most afternoons in the Karon/Kata area.
I simply ended up in Phuket with my bicycle for a little r&r after doing some touring in Vietnam and Laos.

I must get down there and cycle sometime. I have driven down there but never cycled.
Just to go off topic, do you (or anyone else) know about the availability of accommodation between Ranong and Khao Lak? Is there anywhere to stay? I might give it a go this September.

Sorry, I don't know about the accomodation where you mentioned ... I know Ranong but where in the hell is Khao Lak.
I've recently heard good things about Ko Phayam - one of the bigger islands about 35 km south of Ranong. Apparently the development is beginning right now and some locals are trying to restrict it .... go & see it before it's too late !
What do you reckon on the weather down there in Sept, not too hot for cycling?

Whoops .... I've been through Khao Lak twice & didn't realise it ... as I thought it's not too far to Khao Sok Nat Park.
It must be around Khao Lak when the Tsunami hit, that a sizeable Police lauch was washed up 1 km inland and now lays in a pond/watercouse as a memorial to the event.
From memory - the town of Takua Pa was quite sizeable, though unremarkable ... I would imagine accom would be a poossiblity there.

I'm gonna give it a go in September. I think there is accommodation there, plenty of people must have done the route, I just can't find anyones link/blog to it.
Thanks anyway, I will give it a go.
Whilst I am on this thread, Thaicannasia has moved from Sukhumvit 3 to Sukhumvit 26. I haven't been to the new shop but will in September. Dunno if the old phone numbers work. I will ask someone to check.

Doing a search on renting bikes I came across this page on Spice Road's website http://www.spiceroads.com/about/bikesThe prices seem reasonable at 400 Baht a day, the bikes they have are ideal for touring around the place. Does anyone know any other outfit which rents in Bangkok?
